Personalized Slides
Class Ring
As you get older it is likely your class ring has ended up in your jewelry box and is no longer worn. Many that get into collecting slides end up getting that old class ring turned into a slide. This is done by cutting the ring band and attaching the top part of the ring to a slide box. If you are looking to have this done, we recommend finding a company familiar with slides and has done this before. If your local jeweler just "sells slides" and does minor jewelry bench work (such as resizing rings) then you should look elsewhere.
Some slide manufacturers or even local jewelry craftsmen can take an existing piece of jewelry that may be sentimental or a family heirloom and convert it into a slide for you to add to your bracelet. The class ring is just one example. Many times pendants, earrings, and brooches can be converted into a slide.
Engraveable slide
A popular idea is to start with a basic plain engraveable slide that may have a fancy border and get it engraved. Often times people get a data or initials engraved on the bottom of the slide box on other slides. On the plain engraveable slides is generally gives more room for lettering and design. Often times a small gemstone will be set in the plain slide next to the design, such as getting a name engraved and having their birthstone set in the piece.
Gold and Stone Selection
Most slides are 14K gold. Many offer the same slides in 14K white gold as well as in 14K yellow gold. Anything above 14K gold is usually a special order.
Some manufacturers have 10K gold slides as an option to save the buyer some money. Such slides are usually not solid bottom, meaning the back is open, and the true craftsmanship that is found in fine jewelry is missing.
There are many gemstones available. Most slide manufacturers give the option of ordering a slide without a stone set in it so your local jeweler can set the stone you prefer if not offered in that stone, or if you already have a stone you would prefer to use. The more common stones seen in slides are rich purple amethyst, blue topaz, the traditional cameo, deep red garnets, diamonds, emeralds, and sapphires. Of course, everyone has their own taste.
